Two hours north of Bucharest the country changes completely.
The plain runs out at Sinaia and the Carpathians take over. Fortified Saxon towns, a road that climbs past two thousand metres, brown bears in the beech forest and Bran Castle up on its rock. Nearly all of it goes as a day trip and back.

The centre has been rebuilt three times over — French boulevards, an inter-war modernism nobody expects, then a socialist grid driven straight through the middle of it. These three carry more travellers than anything else in the capital.
Getting inside the Parliament
Entry is by guided tour on timed slots, and the desk checks the ID number on your booking. The standard route walks the state halls; the longer one adds the terrace and the vaults underneath.
Ceaușescu’s Bucharest, explained
The blocks, the boulevard cut through the old quarter, the balcony he made his last speech from and the roof the helicopter left. Some run on foot in the centre, some drive out to the villa.
Lipscani after dark
The old merchant lanes are one continuous run of terraces, cellar bars and a beer hall the size of a church. A guide is mostly there to steer you off the main drag and into the ones locals still use.

Bâlea Lake at two thousand metres, the Transfăgărășan switchbacks, rescued bears in the forest above Zărnești and the Bucegi ridge over Sinaia. All of it is a long day from the capital, and half of it is shut in winter.

Old squares and mountain roads turn up all over Europe. A building that swallowed a fifth of a capital city, a hundred rescued bears in one forest, and a hall carved out of rock salt do not.
The Palace of the Parliament
Ceaușescu cleared roughly a fifth of central Bucharest to build it — churches were moved on rails, tens of thousands of people rehoused — and it is still the heaviest building on earth. The tour covers a fraction of the eleven hundred rooms: Romanian marble, Romanian oak, chandeliers too big for the ceilings they hang from. He never saw it finished.

The Libearty Bear Sanctuary
Seventy hectares of oak forest above Zărnești hold more than a hundred brown bears, nearly all of them taken out of restaurant cages and roadside pits. You walk the perimeter paths with a keeper at a set hour. It is the largest sanctuary of its kind anywhere, and it began with three bears in a cage outside a hotel.

The Slănic Prahova salt mine
Two hundred metres down, the old Unirea chambers open into halls the size of cathedrals, the walls cut in chevrons straight out of the rock salt. The air holds twelve degrees all year, which is why half the country comes down here for their lungs. One of the chambers has a football pitch on the floor.

Four Bucharest bookings that will not wait.
Most of this city can be sorted the night before over a beer in Lipscani. These four run on ID checks, closing days and a mountain road that spends half the year under snow.

When the high road is shut and the plain sits at minus ten.
Bucharest winters are cold and flat grey, and the Transfăgărășan closes with the first real snow. The city answers underneath a roof: thermal water under a glass dome out on the airport road, salt chambers two hundred metres down that never change temperature, and castle interiors that are frankly better without the queue.
Brașov, Sibiu, Sighișoara: three squares, eight hundred years.
German settlers built them, walled them against whatever came up the passes, and left the best-preserved medieval centres in this half of Europe. Brașov works as a day trip from the capital. Sibiu and Sighișoara are worth the overnight.
